One of the Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education. To achieve this, one of its targets is to teach the knowledge and skills needed to promote peace and appreciate cultural diversity. In dealing with cultural diversity, the role of pre-service teacher education is crucial. With this at hand, it is imperative for teacher education institutions to produce teachers who possess multicultural sensitivity (MS). Several scholars have pointed out that MS is essential in dealing with cultural diversity.
This study is about the implementation of an online MS course among pre-service teachers in a state university in Mindanao, Philippines. The course comprises five modules, and selected phases of Transformative Learning Theory were applied in the course design. A five-factor MS scale was used in the pre-and post-test. One hundred nine pre-service teachers completed the MS course, and results reveal a statistically significant increase in overall MS. However, a closer look at the factors shows that no significant change was found for intercultural stress and monocultural orientation. This study's findings are similar to the MS course's first implementation. These findings can inform theory and practice on how MS can be increased and what teacher education institutions can do to teach the knowledge and skills needed to promote understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity.
